Clark School Department of Aerospace Engineering Chair and Minta Martin Professor Norm Wereley has been awarded the 2013 Smart Structures and Materials Lifetime Achievement Award from SPIE, the international society for optics and photonics.

The award recognizes outstanding accomplishments in the careers of scientists and engineers in the field of smart structures and materials.

Wereley’s research is focused on the development of actuation and adaptive damping systems for helicopters, aircraft, ground vehicles and robots. He investigates the application of magnetorheological fluids and adaptive energy absorbers to problems of vibration and shock mitigation, especially in the context of occupant protection systems. He has published 150 journal articles, 11 book chapters and more than 240 conference articles. Wereley is also a co-inventor on more than a dozen patents with several patents pending. He is the editor of the Journal of Intelligent Material Systems and Structures and associate editor of Smart Materials and Structures and AIAA (American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics) Journal. He has chaired several international conferences including the 2013 SPIE Smart Structures/NDE Symposium. Wereley has received several awards including AIAA National Capital Section Engineer of the Year (2009), AIAA Sustained Service Award (2011), the AHS Harry T. Jensen Award (2011) and he has been twice awarded the ASME Best Paper Award in Adaptive Structures (2004, 2012). He was the recipient of the 2012 American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Adaptive Structures and Materials Systems Prize. Wereley is a fellow of AIAA (2012), ASME (2008), and the Institute of Physics (2001). Wereley has a B.Eng. from McGill University and Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
